The difference and selection between liquid level switches and liquid level sensors

Liquid level refers to the level of liquid in a sealed or open container.

Technology has developed to this day, from ancient rulers to modern optoelectronic, ultrasonic, radar measuring instruments… Humanity has invented countless methods for liquid level measurement.
In daily life and industrial production and operation, it is often necessary to understand the liquid level inside the container. However, due to various factors such as the tank body being too large, inconvenient to enter, and the presence of harmful substances inside the tank, sensors must be used for measurement.
Nwadays, liquid level switches and sensors have become “experts” in fields such as petrochemical, metallurgy, electricity, pharmaceuticals, water supply and drainage, and environmental protection, playing an important role in the industrial field.
So, what are the differences between liquid level switches and liquid level sensors, and how to choose them in practical applications?

1、 The difference between liquid level switches and liquid level sensors
The working principles of liquid level switches and liquid level sensors are basically the same, so sometimes they are often used indiscriminately. But in fact, the difference between the two is still very obvious:
1. A liquid level switch is a controller that maintains a constant water level by opening the drain or inlet valve based on the signal output of the liquid level sensor. The liquid level switch outputs a switch signal. When measuring the liquid level, the liquid level switch first determines the height of the liquid level and outputs the switch signal based on this height.
The liquid level sensor converts the liquid level signal inside the container into a switch signal or voltage and current signal for output, and then processes the electrical signal through an external circuit. For example, connecting to a PLC, data collector, or professional display to output the height of the liquid level allows the measurer to intuitively and accurately know the liquid level inside the container.
2. The liquid level switch is a switch control circuit, while the liquid level sensor is a circuit component equivalent to voltage and current transformation. That is to say, if you want to measure the position of the liquid, use a liquid level switch, and to accurately measure the height of the liquid level, use a liquid level sensor.

2、 Selection of liquid level switches and sensors
Technological progress has indeed changed people’s lives, with various technologies emerging endlessly. But the question arises, how should we choose a wide variety of dazzling liquid level switches and sensors?
1. Before selecting the type of liquid to be tested, it is necessary to first clarify whether its chemical properties are toxic, highly corrosive, and prone to contamination. If the medium viscosity of the measured liquid is too high, it will stick to the sensor, etc. It is recommended to use non-contact measurement. If the medium is a conventional acid-base solution, water, oil, etc., contact measurement can be used.
2. With the development of society and technological progress, many outdated liquid level measurement sensors have been eliminated. Sensors that adopt the latest measurement technology and meet certain requirements for measurement speed and accuracy are highly sought after by people. In terms of non-contact measurement, radar level gauges and ultrasonic level sensors are often used; In terms of contact measurement, photoelectric liquid level sensors, tuning fork liquid level switches, etc. are commonly used.
