What typically causes the float of a magnetic flap level gauge to get stuck?

Magnetic flap level gauges are widely used in industries such as chemicals and power generation due to their intuitive display and lack of need for an external power supply. However, float jamming is one of the most common malfunctions; once it occurs, the flap indicator ceases to move, rendering level monitoring ineffective. The causes of float jamming are complex and varied, but generally fall into the following categories.

Magnetic flap level gauges

Impurities and crystallization within the medium are primary causes. If the measured medium contains ferromagnetic impurities, they are attracted to the surface of the float by its internal permanent magnet; as they accumulate over time, they restrict the float's movement or cause it to jam completely. Furthermore, if the medium has high viscosity or tends to crystallize or solidify at low temperatures, the resistance to float movement increases significantly. Phenomena such as the crystallization of caustic soda solutions at low temperatures or scale formation from water containing calcium and magnesium ions create hard deposits on the float surface and the inner wall of the measuring tube; these deposits gradually narrow the gap between the float and the tube wall, eventually leading to a "seizing" effect.

Internal faults within the float itself are also common causes. Prolonged immersion in the medium can lead to corrosion-induced perforation, allowing the medium to seep inside; this alters the float's density, resulting in insufficient buoyancy to rise properly. Under high-temperature and high-pressure conditions, the float may deform; an increase in its outer diameter can cause it to wedge against the inner wall of the measuring tube, resulting in a mechanical lock-up. Additionally, the internal magnet may undergo demagnetization after prolonged exposure to high temperatures; a weakened magnetic field fails to effectively drive the rotation of the flaps.

Improper installation and environmental factors cannot be overlooked. Magnetic flap level gauges must be installed strictly vertically, typically requiring the verticality deviation to be controlled within ±1 degree. Any tilt generates a component of the float's weight that exerts lateral pressure against the tube wall, causing a sharp increase in sliding resistance. If the installation angle deviates by more than 3 degrees, the friction coefficient between the float and the guide tube increases significantly. Moreover, rapid depressurization without properly opening the balance valve during operation can trigger violent gas-liquid surges, causing the float to impact the wall and shift out of position.

Failure of the magnetic coupling can also create the illusion of a jammed float. Although magnetic flap level gauges operate based on the attractive force of permanent magnets, prolonged exposure to strong magnetic fields or excessively high temperatures can cause the internal magnet within the float to lose its magnetism. In such cases, the indicator flaps fail to flip in synchronization with the float; consequently, while the gauge may still display a level reading, it has effectively entered a "frozen" or non-responsive state.

In summary, the causes of a stuck float can stem from various factors, including the properties of the process medium, the equipment itself, and installation or operational issues. During troubleshooting, the problem can be quickly pinpointed by first observing the indicator flaps and then testing the unit by moving a magnet along the chamber wall; appropriate corrective measures—such as cleaning, replacing the float, or adjusting the installation—can then be implemented based on the specific cause identified.
