What precautions should be taken before installing a mass flow meter

As high-precision flow measurement instruments, mass flow meters are widely used in sectors such as petroleum, chemicals, and pharmaceuticals. Their measurement accuracy and long-term stability depend heavily on proper installation. Key aspects to consider during installation are outlined below.

I. Selection of Installation Location and Environment

The installation site should be away from sources of strong vibration, such as pumps, compressors, and large motors. If this is unavoidable, vibration-dampening foundations or flexible pipe sections must be used. The meter should also be kept away from equipment that generates strong electromagnetic interference, such as transformers and variable frequency drives. For outdoor installations, appropriate measures for rain and sun protection are required.

II. Straight Pipe Section Requirements

To ensure a stable flow profile before the fluid enters the flow meter, sufficient straight pipe sections must be provided. Generally, it is recommended to maintain a straight pipe length of at least 5–10 times the pipe diameter upstream and 3–5 times the diameter downstream. If flow-disturbing elements such as elbows or valves are present, the straight pipe sections should be extended, or flow conditioners should be installed.

III. Installation Orientation and Flow Direction

Ensure that the flow direction indicated on the meter matches the actual direction of fluid flow. Mass flow meters are typically installed on horizontal pipelines. When measuring liquids, avoid installation at the highest point of the pipeline to prevent gas accumulation; for vertical installations, the fluid should flow from bottom to top.

IV. Pipeline Connection and Stress Control

Connecting flanges must be concentrically aligned, and bolts tightened evenly; never use the flow meter to force the pipeline into alignment. Thermal expansion and contraction of the pipeline can transmit stress to the measuring tube, causing zero-point drift. Fixed supports should be installed on both sides of the sensor.

V. Grounding and Electrical Connections

The mass flow meter must be reliably grounded, with a grounding resistance generally not exceeding 4–10 ohms. Shielded cables should be used to connect the sensor and the transmitter, and the power supply voltage must meet the equipment specifications during wiring.

VI. Purging and Pipeline Cleaning

For newly installed pipelines or those that have been idle for a long period, the entire pipeline must be thoroughly purged to remove impurities such as welding slag and metal filings before installing the flow meter. Installing a filter upstream of the flow meter is recommended to prevent small particles from clogging the sensor. VII. Upstream/Downstream Valves and Bypass Configuration

It is recommended to install shut-off valves and a bypass line upstream and downstream of the sensor to facilitate zero-point adjustment, maintenance, and servicing. The flow control valve should be installed downstream of the flow meter; when the meter is in operation, the upstream shut-off valve must be fully open.

In summary, proper installation is a prerequisite for the mass flow meter to deliver high-precision performance. The aforementioned specifications must be strictly adhered to during installation, followed by commissioning and calibration to ensure the equipment operates reliably and stably over the long term.
