The Value of High-Precision Radar Level Gauges with Small Blind Zones

In industries such as fine chemicals, pharmaceuticals, and food processing, small-scale reactors and metering tanks often have limited height, creating a critical need for minimal measurement dead zones and high precision. Standard radar level meters typically have dead zones exceeding 0.3 meters; for tanks only one or two meters tall, this represents an excessive proportion of the total height, making it impossible to meet the requirements for precise metering and ingredient blending. Consequently, many enterprises have been forced to rely on contact-based instruments, which introduce challenges regarding cleaning, hygiene, and corrosion resistance.

The technical challenge in achieving a small dead zone lies in near-field echo processing. At close range, signal coupling interference occurs between the transmitted and received signals; standard algorithms cannot distinguish between them, resulting in a dead zone. Achieving a minimal dead zone requires not only optimized antenna hardware design but, more importantly, breakthroughs in near-field signal processing algorithms—which is precisely why low-end products struggle to minimize dead zones effectively.
With 30 years of experience in precision measurement and control R&D and a commitment to developing proprietary core algorithms, Vacorda Instruments has created an 80GHz radar level meter with a minimal dead zone. By optimizing antenna design and utilizing a self-developed near-field echo processing algorithm, the device reduces the measurement dead zone to just 0.05 meters and achieves a near-field measurement accuracy of ±1mm, perfectly meeting the precision requirements of small reactors and metering tanks. Featuring a compact design for easy installation and non-contact measurement, the unit is available in hygienic and corrosion-resistant versions, making it suitable for small-tank applications across the pharmaceutical, food, and fine chemical sectors. It supports HART and Modbus communication protocols, allowing for direct integration with blending control systems to ensure precise level measurement.

As a high-precision solution for domestic substitution, Vacorda minimal-dead-zone radar level meter rivals high-end imported models in performance while costing only about half as much. It has already been deployed on blending and metering tanks at numerous pharmaceutical and fine chemical companies, replacing existing contact-based instruments; this upgrade has simultaneously improved measurement accuracy and reduced the workload associated with maintenance and cleaning.
